
The router would have the default "block all connections not started from inside the network" and drop the connection. If they were trying to use that IP to connect to their server, it would be blocked by the router because the connection would essentially be leaving their house, to their ISP, and back into their house. I only brought up their external IPs because it's the one you see on the start menu when you boot up the game. All they need is to be on the same network and have each other's local IPs.


They also don't want to open up to the internet because it's just a LAN server. Some consumer routers have the ability to place different hardwired connections into different subnets, which I wanted to rule out first. Right now they can't even connect to the server, which indicates that they may not be in the same LAN because there wouldn't be any higher level routing blocking communication. First they have to check that they're in the same LAN first by pinging the computer hosting the server using their local IPs.
